Serenity: “I Had To Work for My Voice”

We are thrilled to share that one of our own has been featured as a Student of NYC!

Students of NYC, an initiative of the United Federation of Teachers, celebrates New York City public school students who are shaping better futures for themselves and their communities.

Before graduating in June, Serenity attended Rockaway Park High School for Environmental Sustainability, an NYC Community School where The Child Center of NY serves as lead community-based organization. 

In her role as Child Center Community School director, Ms. Lakia Echols got to know Serenity—and how truly deserving she is of this recognition.  

“Serenity is a true leader,” Ms. Lakia says. “Since the first day I met Serenity and she told me about all her community involvement, I watched her growth over the years in her position in the school leadership and the NYPD Explorers program. Serenity is always helpful and helps other students with advice. She has been an outstanding role model for other students.”

In turn, Serenity notes that Ms. Lakia has been one of her most influential and positive role models. 

“In my high school journey, Ms. Kia allowed me to show my full potential,” Serenity says. “I’ve gone to her about advice and so much more. I first met Ms. Kia when she came into the school my sophomore year. I’ve been able to talk to her and gain advice ever since.”
