The Basie Jewels performed at Radio City Music Hall at Rockefeller Center, directly preceding the legendary Rockettes!
The Basie Jewels dance program was initiated by M.S. 72 in Jamaica, Queens, and The Child Center of NY's Beacon Program at the school joined in collaboration.
Beacon Programs are DYCD-funded school-based community centers serving children age six and older, as well as adults. Here, community members engage in enrichment activities, explore their strengths, and find out all the wonderful things they are capable of—including dance! Led by Child Center Activity Specialist Daquan Harris, the Basie Jewels practice three days a week for two hours each day, exhibiting extraordinary commitment, passion, and ability. Their efforts paid off in a top-notch performance that left the audience delighted, and the dancers rightfully proud.

“I am so proud of our Basie Jewels team,” says Program Director Jonathan Hunter. “This opportunity highlights the capabilities of our youth when given proper guidance, direction, and opportunity. We are just scratching the surface of talent we have here in South Jamaica.
“We would also like to thank our school partners, The Catherine and Count Basie Magnet School for Multimedia & Performing Arts and Principal Sandusky, for collaborating with us to make our participants’ dreams come true.”
As for the Basie Jewels themselves, it’s clear this occasion will stay with them.
"When I really think about performing at Radio City,” Osamudiamen, a sixth grader told us, “I can only think of how exciting it felt. Even though it was a long and entertaining experience, it was kind of scary. I'm glad I had the support and compliments of the people there to know I did good."
Angelique, also in sixth grade, agrees: "Radio City Music Hall was very exciting to experience. Not everyone can make it there, so it felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
Next month the Basie Jewels will be performing during a Brooklyn Nets game. We can’t wait to cheer them on!
